You Raise Me Up….to Much, Much More

“You Raise Me Up”  by Josh Groban

I enjoy listening to  music and lyrics.   Everyday as I drive in my car, I know I will  learn, feel or become inspired by something that comes across the radio, CD or ipod.   I look forward to  listening for that one “thing” that I can take with me and ponder throughout the day.  (It’s a “Come to the Edge Today” habit)

I’d like to share with you one of those inspirations.  By now, you’ve heard Josh Groban’s, “You Raise Me Up”.  The words and presentation have inspired millions.   When listening to these beautiful words, I think of God or a person who embodies these words in my life:  “You raise me up so I can stand on mountains, you raise me up to walk on stormy seas.  I am strong when I am on your shoulders, you raise me up to more than I can be.”  I am thankful for this interpretation.

Then, one day I listened to it through a new “lens”.  This new interpretation does not discredit the previous one which gives appreciation to others for help and support.    I heard another marvelous layer:  What if (knowing that I am a child of the Creator and we are inseparable), I was the one who helped Me stand on mountains?  What if I helped Me walk on stormy seas?  What if I can help myself to be more than I can be?

Whoa!  The immediate response was, “No – not you!  You are not strong enough.  You can’t do this.  You can’t be more than you can be””, you can’t, you can’t, you can’t.”

Then I thought, “What if ‘real living’ means I can stand on mountains because I trust myself enough to do it?  What if believing in myself is what is needed to live the life of my dreams?  What if allowing that inner strength and wisdom that is inside of me as a gift from God/Source is what raises me up after all?  What if the other people in my life I thought were doing the raising-up were there instead, as reflections of my strength so I could raise Me up?”

Whoa!  I stopped the car………..This was life changing!  This was “Come to the Edge Today” leaping stuff!  Since that day I have seen myself in a new and deeper way.   “I am strong when I am on your shoulders”………I am grateful that I have claimed “Me”….

Today’s “leaping” exercise:  Purchase or listen to this version of Josh Groban’s “You Raise Me Up”.  Allow yourself to get comfortable in a quiet space.  Keep a notebook ready for inspiration and reflection.  Listen to the song at least 3 times.  The first time, listen with a person or God/Higher Power in mind.  Feel and see the situation brought forth from the lyrics.  Write any thoughts, feelings, etc. in your notebook.  The second and third listening experience – listen with you as the subject of the song.  Close your eyes and see yourself thanking “You” for raising you up.  Be sure to write these feelings, thoughts and experiences in your notebook.   Repeat daily!
