Experience These Lazy, Hazy, Crazy Days Of Summer!

I live in Minnesota – yes, a cold and wintry state.  We northern climate folks savor our 90 “holy days” commonly known as June, July and August.  Thankfully, These “holy days” have finally arrived so it’s time to experience their gifts:  The earthy smell of unfrozen ground (yes, dirt!), the beauty of color (especially green), the sweet fragrance of flowers, the sound of water lapping onto the dock, the birds song greeting each new day, children screaming with delight splashing in their tiny swimming pools, the smell of a barbeque on a Summer’s evening – all these, and more are what we dream of during the colder, slower paced months of winter.  While each season shares its beauty, it is the energy and aliveness of Summer that we cherish so dearly.

As the delights of Summer’s sights, sounds, smells, tastes and experiences are upon us, I offer these moments of reflection as a “Come to the Edge Today” reminder to TAKE THE LEAP and experience the lazy, hazy, crazy days of Summer…NOW!

Take a leap! Experience something you’ve never tried before.   Allow yourself to wear a new Summer style!  Get a sassy new haircut (don’t worry – it will grow back if you don’t like it!).   Try a summer activity you’ve never experienced before (parasailing anyone?)  Get up early;  listen to the birds welcome the day.   Try planting new varieties of flowers or vegetables.   Walk an extra mile (or block).  Go to a local baseball game just for the fun of it.  Give yourself the pleasure of reading books and magazines on a hot Summer afternoon!  Sit beside a lake or river to just listen and watch (leave your ipod at home).  Take that long awaited trip touring the U.S.!  Invite neighbors over for a “just-because-it’s-Summer barbeque”!  And if you have accrued vacation time – Use It!

A “Come to the Edge” Summer is more about attitude and willingness to ‘let loose a little’ than it is about what you do or how much time you have to do it in.  For example:  Let’s say you have one hour before you begin a weekend shift at work.  You could moan about the fact that you have to work all weekend, and essentially waste away that hour OR you could declare your own one hour Summer holiday!  Here’s how that scenario could be transformed into a magical experience:  Instead of moaning, you head outside, grab your favorite lawn chair and soak your feet in a bucket of cold, soothing water.   While sipping a cold lemonade, you eagerly read a chapter from your favorite Summer book!  As a finale, you gently close your eyes for 15 minutes basking in the warmth of the sun as it shines lovingly upon your face.  You “get lost” in the pleasure and relaxation of the moment and emerge relaxed and refreshed…all in just 60 minutes!

Today’s “leaping” exercise:  Declare your own one hour holiday!  Create a magical hour!  Emerge relaxed and refreshed!  Repeat daily for 90 days!

Commit to really l-i-v-i-n-g these 90 days!

Allow yourself to slow down and enjoy the lazy, hazy crazy days of Summer!
