Mind talk vs Heart talk -It’s a ‘No-Brainer’

“Most people are so completely identified with the voice in the head – the incessant stream of involuntary and compulsive thinking and the emotions that accompany it – that we may describe them as being possessed by their mind.  As long as you are completely unaware of this, you take the thinker to be who you are.”  -Eckart Tolle (A New Earth, Awakening To Your Life’s Purpose)

Have you heard of the phrase “mind talk”?  It is used by us everyday or, more accurately, it uses us everyday.  I’m sure you recognize it – it’s the voice in our head that has an opinion about everything:

  • Judgment with an air of superiority:  “Right – like you’re going to succeed in that”
  • I am right/You are wrong: “You can’t do that.  I tried it before and it can’t be done”
  • Labeling:  “He is stupid.  She is a jerk.  That group is dangerous”
  • Resentment/Holding a grudge:  “She hurt me so badly – I will never forgive her”
  • Complaining:  “Why am I the one always stuck doing the chores?”
  • Justification:  “I am better than she is because…                                                           ________________________________________________

“The intuitive mind is a sacred gift and the rational mind is a faithful servant.  We have created a society that honors the servant and has forgotten the gift.”                 –Albert Einstein    ________________________________________________

Yes, the mind IS a great gift to be used and I honestly believed that my thoughts were “me”.  I was shocked when I realized that I am not my thoughts.  The implications are enormous!

For instance, what if my mind/ego supported a falsehood that believes in separateness and protection, defensiveness and fear and the need to strengthen ‘self’ to the diminishment of the other?

What if my heart/soul, the larger part of Me contained the true “Me”?  What if we are all connected with each other through the great connection with God, with All-That-Is?  What if I am worthy because of it?  What if you are worthy too?  What if this is the Love I have been searching for?  What if Love and its powerful energy are found not in my mind, but in my heart/soul?

OK, then how does one learn to lead with the heart rather than reacting to all the mind chatter? As with anything, it is just a  habit and habits can be learned.

Today’s “leaping” exercises” Following are some practical tips for learning to quiet the mind talk and increase your heart talk:

  • Pay attention  to what you are thinking!  Notice your thoughts! Become aware of what you think!
    • Keep a notebook of the types of thoughts that run through your mind
    • Stop every 10 minutes or so and notice what has been on your mind
  • Breathe!  Stop what you are doing and focus on your breathing.
    • Listen without mind commentary
    • When you notice the commentary that inevitably follows, re-focus again on the listening
    • Practice, practice, practice!
    • Try it for 5 seconds and increase over time
    • Breathing is one of the best methods to slow down mind talk – quickly!
  • Listen and focus on the sounds of nature (try to keep “thoughts” out of it)
    • Listen without commentary
    • Practice, practice, practice!
    • Try it for 5 seconds and increase over time
  • Listen and focus on any “white noise” surrounding you (fans, computers, motors, etc)
    • Listen without commentary
    • Practice, practice, practice!
    • Try it for 5 seconds and increase over time
  • Learn to meditate
    • Practice!
    • This is one of the best ways to quiet your mind, allowing you to open to your heart’s messages
  • Literally give your attention to your heart area
    • Feel your heart beat
    • Learn to “sense” that portion of You
    • In time, listen for and “hear” the messages emanating from your heart area (they ARE there and you WILL hear them!)

It may surprise you what is going on!  Once you become aware of how your mind is interacting with You and once you become aware of  the wisdom pouring from your heart/soul, you will soon be leaping and soaring toward creating the life of your dreams!
