Breath of Heaven

I wrote this reflection last Christmas.  The journey, trust and faith of Mary and Joseph give me hope and courage this season as we embrace the families of Connecticut…….

Our lives have changed since celebrating Christmas last year.  Are you asking yourself and asking God, “What do I do?  How am I supposed to react to it, or more importantly, how can I create and grow with this new situation I find myself in?”  How can I be the sculptor with this new slab of clay before me?  How do I interact with it?  How do I create with You, the One who gave me the clay?

Mary and Joseph probably asked similar heart-felt questions. From “out-of-the-blue” they were presented with an invitation to “Come to the Edge” – an invitation to journey into a bigger life.  At first they were confused.  They asked questions and pondered, then both put their trust in the Inviter; they aligned, then took action. They were willing, active participants in their own lives and used their free will to say “yes” to an unknown path (not having our vantage point of knowing where their path would lead).

Sounds like us, doesn’t it?  Each of us has our own invitation to “Come to the Edge”.  We have our own journeys to Bethlehem – our own opportunities to ask questions, to ponder, align, then to create with the One who is eager to sculpt the clay with us as we too, journey into a bigger life.

The key phrase above is “With Us”!  We are not alone on our journey.  Heavens no!  We have the “Breath of Heaven” with us and in us!  This Breath is always here for us.  Life really gets “good” when we allow our lungs and our being to be filled with it.  With this “Breath of Heaven”, we L-I-V-E and leap and soar everyday, no matter the situation.

Mary and Joseph breathed it.

We can too.

Today’s “leaping” exercise:  Five years ago, my Dad was in the hospital over Christmas.  Each day I would travel 20 minutes to visit him; because I love Christmas music, I would daily play Amy Grant’s CD in the car.  As his health waned, I prayed for strength and an aligned attitude so our visit could be meaningful and life-giving for all of us.  “Breath of Heaven” became my driving prayer-song each day for 2 months.  Over time, I came to understand the depth of the refrain, “Breath of Heaven” – it became my mantra and its meaning for me is now beyond words.

Today’s exercise is to relax and focus on the lyrics, but specifically on the refrain “Breath of Heaven”.  When the song is complete, just lie quietly with your eyes closed and repeat the phrase, “Breath of Heaven”, “Breath of Heaven”, “Breath of Heaven”, until you feel you are complete.  Repeat each day.  Soon you will find you have reached new depths along the path with the One who journeys and creates with you……….Enjoy.
