Yesterday, I was in a coffee shop filled with a variety of people: Kids running around, teens, adult women and men, some sitting in chairs, some in wheelchairs. I looked over to the corner of the shop and noticed an older woman holding the most beautiful infant I’d ever seen – I guessed the baby to be about 2 weeks old. So small, so perfect, so marvelous! I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her! Perfection was 20 feet away! Others in the shop were noticing and smiling too.
What is it about babies that causes us to immediately lower resistance and go into a space of wonder and love? It happens to me and to most people I know. They take us inward to that place of joy and hope and beauty and love. Such a gift they give to us, just by being themselves!
Then, I wondered: The kids running around, teens, adult women and men, some sitting in chairs, some in wheelchairs in that coffee shop were gifting me too – just by being themselves. Could I see the gift of “them”? Was I open to receiving? Do I even see the gift that I am to myself and to others just by being ‘me’? Hmmm..I wondered about that.
What if I could allow myself to perceive the kids running around, teens, adult women and men, some sitting in chairs, some in wheelchairs in that coffee shop with the same lens that I view that perfect infant? What if I could allow the experience of them to take me inward to that place of joy and hope and beauty and love?
Such a gift to be received! How to begin to view the people in my world in a new, more open way? One way to begin: slow down and see people as living, co-creative souls with gifts and talents and love and beauty – EACH ONE! I spent some time doing that with the strangers in the coffee shop. I did not talk to any of them, but as I glanced at each one, I said a little “Thank you for the gift of you”. My heart became lighter and I somehow became connected to each one. For some, this may seem rather silly, but to me, it was a lovely way to experience the gifts that are mine to experience, if only by recognizing their (and my) gifts and divinity.
Thank you, baby girl. You expanded my ability to experience even more Love that surrounds me! I am grateful.
Today’s “leaping” exercise: Spend time with a baby (or watch a youtube video of children) and notice how you feel. Then, go to a place where you can be surrounded by other people. Slow down and notice each person. Try to see each one as living, co-creative souls with gifts and talents and love and beauty. Then, say a silent “Thank you for the gift of you” to each person. Notice how you feel. How did this experience affect you? How does the gratitude you offered feel in your heart? How does it compare with the feelings you experienced with the baby (or video)? Repeat and allow it to open a new channel within.
We all are divine! – Joan Kappes
