Love through the Looking Glass
I drummed up enough courage to look at myself in the mirror. I looked and saw…her. This person so familiar, yet oftentimes, so distant. I yearned to reach out. Then, ever so timidly, I said,
“I could easily fall in Love with you.”
She said, “Thank you; and will you Love all parts of me?”
“What do you mean?” I asked.
“If you open your heart to all of me – my thoughts, emotions, beliefs – both limiting and un-limiting, passions, talents, quirks, body type; if you open to the divine energy which flows so beautifully within, to the inner wisdom – the part you call ‘soul’ which is connected to All-That-Is – accepting all of it, then you will actually be in Love.”
“But, I must prove my worth to deserve your Love and I find myself continually falling short.”
She lovingly looked at me through the mirror and said, “Open your heart and simply Love me without judgment, condemnation or regret. It matters not to me what you have done or not done, will do or not do, will be or not be. You see, I have been in Love with you since before the beginning. I long to grow and share, laugh and learn, Love and fly with you. I have been lovingly waiting for you to make the first move.”
“How do I make the first move?” I longingly asked.
“Look at me now. Declare your Love for me and your desire to grow with me. Believe that I am on your side. Open your heart and let all-of-me shine through. Spend quiet time with me and get to know the real me. I am here for you. Open your heart to Loving me and to being Loved by me.”
Looking through the mirror, I shifted my gaze, looked directly into her eyes and said “I Love you”. And as I said this, the two of us became One.
Today’s “leaping” exercise: Spend time alone with yourself in front of a mirror. Read the above out loud to yourself. Feel what is being communicated back to you. During this time, commit to developing a Loving relationship with yourself. Spend time in front of the mirror each day connecting with ‘you’. Declare each day: “I LOVE YOU”! and get ready for magic!
Aren’t you lovely? –Joan Kappes

Laughter and smiles are the powerhouse ‘freebies’ of the Universe! They contain the energy to raise our spirits and catapult us out of the muck. In an instant, one smile from a baby, one belly laugh from a friend or one genuine smile from a stranger can lighten our load and change our entire outlook!
Smiles and laughter can be found everywhere and in every situation! It may seem too common or simple to even notice, but smiles & laughter are those ‘free for the pickin’ gifts that expand our hearts & change our mood, if we allow it. Each gift is unique and there is absolutely no limit to how many we can give or receive. Oh, and another fabulous attribute: BOTH the giver and receiver benefit from each laugh and smile!
So, as we journey at “The Edge”, eagerly creating the life of our dreams, make the decision to reap the benefits of these powerhouse ‘freebies’: Joy, fun, love, connectedness, a new perspective, a bigger heart and 1,000,000 other unique gifts just waiting to be received.
Today’s “leaping” exercise: Listen to this classic video from Mary Poppins, “I Love to Laugh” (see below). Allow yourself to smile or laugh at least once during the song! Then, go find someone and give a smile or the magic of your laughter to another.

It is lovely to receive a message that you know is given ‘just for you’. Yesterday, I re-read a section from my meditation journal. This one grabbed me and I am drawn to share it with you. Perhaps it too, is written ‘just for you.’
“Everything is wrapped in Love and Light.
Wrapped in Love’s cocoon, everything unfolds beautifully.
It’s ok to experience perfection.
You fear that it will not turn out.
Holding on in fear or control does not serve you.
It is an illusion of security.
It’s ok to let go.
Focus on the essence of what you want……..
We want you to have perfection –
Perfection is all that is ever created.
Perfection is all that is given.
View your minutes, days and life as the receiver of perfection.
It is our non-physical standard and it can be yours too.
Focus upon it.
Perfection is constantly offered; allow yourself to experience it.
Allow yourself to let go.
Let Us bring it to you.
It is and always will be….perfect”
Today’s “leaping exercise“: Find a comfortable spot and gently breathe in and out, in and out. Release any thoughts that are coming and going. Read the above 3 times, then choose the phrase that stands out for you. Write that phrase 10 times in your journal and allow yourself to receive whatever message is intended for you as you write. Trust the message and its perfection for you. Re-read your journal entry at least once each day for 7 days.

When I was in college, I was a night ‘guard’ for an energy company, working the midnight to 8am shift. Each hour, I was required to make the rounds. So, for 25 minutes every hour, in the deep of night, it was just me and the moon. We became ‘friends’ and I welcomed my companion’s gifts of constancy, light and feeling of safety.
When I read this beautiful poem (below) about the moon, it reminded me of those days and the nights since, when I open myself to its magic. “Thank You” to my favorite poet and guy at “The Edge”, Steve Garnaas Holmes.
May you experience its peace and connect with its wisdom….
To you I wish
the peace of the moon,
who waxes and wanes
and is not troubled;
the beauty of the moon,
only partly seen
but always wondrous;
the silence of the moon,
who does not insist
if you do not notice;
the courage of the moon
who is not afraid
of her own darkness;
the steadiness of the moon,
who never gets caught
in the tricky branches;
the constancy of the moon,
who never forgets
to come back;
the wisdom of the moon
who sees clearly
when we close our eyes;
the faith of the moon
who is always full
to the sun.
The blessing of the moon
be with you.
Today’s “leaping” exercise: Tonight, when the moon rises, bundle up (for those of you who live “up north”!) and spend time with the moon. Print this poem if you are able, or read it prior to going outside. Read it either aloud or silently. Use all of your senses to experience the sky and the moon and your surroundings. Listen with your heart………..What is it saying? How much can you hear? Record it in your journal and … repeat!

This reflection is dedicated to Eric and Tracy – two very special people in my life who recently passed from this physical life and have entered into their next journey as the fullness of Love.
Their physical life was, like ours, a journey…a quest for experiencing Love on this earth. It took them many places; they had many experiences, some pleasant and some not so much. Through it all, they learned of Love, expanded into Love, lived from Love and experienced the exquisite reality of Love.
We too, are on a similar quest. Often, we ramble and feel lost and alone. Sometimes we feel like Love is ‘out there’ and beyond our reach. Yet, if we focus just a little, we begin to see evidence that there is much, much more to Love and we come to know that it is not ‘out there’ at all.
I’d like to share with you a few insights about Love discovered by fellow travelers who also have “Come to the Edge Today”.
“Whenever I get gloomy with the state of the world, I think about the arrivals gate at Heathrow Airport. General opinion’s starting to make out that we live in a world of hatred and greed, but I don’t see that. It seems to me that Love is everywhere. Often, it’s not particularly dignified or newsworthy, but it’s always there – fathers and sons, mothers and daughters, husbands and wives, boyfriends, girlfriends, old friends. When the planes hit theTwinTowers, as far as I know, none of the phone calls from the people on board were messages of hate or revenge – they were all messages of Love. If you look for it, I’ve got a sneaky feeling you’ll find that love actually is… all around.” –from the film, Love Actually
“Love is, LIFE!!! It is everywhere and in everything. I believe that LOVE starts from within ourselves. When we have true love inside us we become wide open for true LOVE in our life.” – Danielle Daily
“Love is the energy that binds us together and makes us whole”. –Joan Kappes
“Love is the moment that hearts open and laughter or tears are the expression instead of words. It is looking into your own eyes and seeing who you really are and you can’t help but smile from ear to ear.” – Cassandra Lyons
“Love is a force more formidable than any other. It is invisible – it cannot be seen or measured, yet it is powerful enough to transform you in a moment, and offer you more joy than any material possession could.” -Barbara de Angelis
“Love is not what we become, but what we already are.” -Unk
“Love is what I feel when I watch the sun rise, hold a baby or snuggle a puppy. It is the food of life, our breath, our smiles, our laughter. Love is what we are made of.” –Janet Nestor
“Love is a fruit in season at all times, and within reach of every hand.” -Mother Teresa
“Love is the master key that opens the gates of happiness.” -Oliver Wendell Holmes
“Love is but the discovery of ourselves in others, and the delight in the recognition.” -Alexander Smith
“Love is opening our heart and saying “Yes” to the joy, the pain, the grief, the bliss, the laughter, the sorrow and the beauty of letting ourselves be known, and of truly knowing another.” –Chelsea Beauchamp
“Since love grows within you, so beauty grows. For love is the beauty of the soul.” -Saint Augustine
“We are surrounded by the only real energy there is: Love. We swim in it like a fish swims in water. It flows in us and through us and as us. Our journey is to become aware of it and re-claim it; and when we do…. Oh, what a life to be lived!” – Joan Kappes
“Love is the only gold.” -Alfred Lord Tennyson
“God is love.” -1 John 4:8
“Love is the only game that is not called on account of darkness.” -Thomas Carlyle
“Love is the river of life in the world.” -Henry Ward Beecher
“Love is all you need.” -Paul McCartney
“Love does not need to be found, it just needs to be re-membered and claimed.” – Joan Kappes
“Love is patient, love is kind. It does not envy, it does not boast, it is not proud. It is not rude, it is not self-seeking, it is not easily angered, it keeps no record of wrongs. Love does not delight in evil but rejoices with the truth. It always protects, always trusts, always hopes, always perseveres. Love never fails. -1Corinthians 13:4-8
“Love is unseen, yet its reflection is everywhere.” – Joan Kappes

One More Circle Lyrics
And we’ve been stricken by the wonder of it all
Stricken dumb, stricken dumb
And we have sometimes felt so faint we want to fall
Overcome, but all in all
CHORUS: I’d say this year in flight together has been fun
What say we make one more circle around the sun
We have raised our fists in anger and we’ve tried
To work it out, work it out
That we need each other, we cannot deny
There is no doubt, there is no doubt
I’d say this year in flight together has been a good, good one
What say we make one more circle One more circle
One more circle around the sun
Eagerly anticipating traveling with you – Joan Kappes

I wrote this reflection last Christmas. The journey, trust and faith of Mary and Joseph give me hope and courage this season as we embrace the families of Connecticut…….
Our lives have changed since celebrating Christmas last year. Are you asking yourself and asking God, “What do I do? How am I supposed to react to it, or more importantly, how can I create and grow with this new situation I find myself in?” How can I be the sculptor with this new slab of clay before me? How do I interact with it? How do I create with You, the One who gave me the clay?
Mary and Joseph probably asked similar heart-felt questions. From “out-of-the-blue” they were presented with an invitation to “Come to the Edge” – an invitation to journey into a bigger life. At first they were confused. They asked questions and pondered, then both put their trust in the Inviter; they aligned, then took action. They were willing, active participants in their own lives and used their free will to say “yes” to an unknown path (not having our vantage point of knowing where their path would lead).
Sounds like us, doesn’t it? Each of us has our own invitation to “Come to the Edge”. We have our own journeys to Bethlehem – our own opportunities to ask questions, to ponder, align, then to create with the One who is eager to sculpt the clay with us as we too, journey into a bigger life.
The key phrase above is “With Us”! We are not alone on our journey. Heavens no! We have the “Breath of Heaven” with us and in us! This Breath is always here for us. Life really gets “good” when we allow our lungs and our being to be filled with it. With this “Breath of Heaven”, we L-I-V-E and leap and soar everyday, no matter the situation.
Mary and Joseph breathed it.
We can too.
Today’s “leaping” exercise: Five years ago, my Dad was in the hospital over Christmas. Each day I would travel 20 minutes to visit him; because I love Christmas music, I would daily play Amy Grant’s CD in the car. As his health waned, I prayed for strength and an aligned attitude so our visit could be meaningful and life-giving for all of us. “Breath of Heaven” became my driving prayer-song each day for 2 months. Over time, I came to understand the depth of the refrain, “Breath of Heaven” – it became my mantra and its meaning for me is now beyond words.
Today’s exercise is to relax and focus on the lyrics, but specifically on the refrain “Breath of Heaven”. When the song is complete, just lie quietly with your eyes closed and repeat the phrase, “Breath of Heaven”, “Breath of Heaven”, “Breath of Heaven”, until you feel you are complete. Repeat each day. Soon you will find you have reached new depths along the path with the One who journeys and creates with you……….Enjoy.
Merry Christmas – Joan Kappes
