The Playground of Your Life

Have you noticed that some people thrive in the area of relationships yet struggle with finances? Others are rolling in the dough, yet are lonely and alone while still others have amazing relationships yet continually struggle with chronic health issues.

Why is this?

Over the years, each of us creates unique combinations with these areas; I call these areas (abundance, relationships, health) ‘playgrounds’. It seems that while all of us play in each area, we tend to have developed one particular playground which has become the perfect focal point for our (potential) major growth. (This is the area some may call their area of greatest struggle, pain, challenge or blockage, but I choose to call it ‘playing in the playground’, because this is what we do when living a “Come to the Edge Today” life – we choose to focus our play and create in the sandbox where we experience the most growth and expansion!)

Playing in this playground that you have developed over the years can lead to the greatest re-discovery of who you really are and what you’re really made of. It contains everything required: “Toys”, “blocks”, struggles, tools, circumstances, people and events for experiencing the “You” that you’ve been searching for! It is THE place to be!

“You’ve got to be kidding me, Joan”, you say. “I try to avoid that playground at all costs! It’s too painful. It’s too big! It’s easier for me to just sit on the bench and ask: Why do these things happen to me – I never have enough money (I’ve never had a quality relationship, or I’ve always had poor health)! Why me? Poor, poor me……”

If you are willing to venture into that playground….just for a little while, you’ll discover the real answer to “why me?” You’ll also discover that the real “You” is already playing there and so is God/Source… and so much more! If you are willing, read on and I’ll show you how…

Today’s “leaping” exercise: The purpose of this exercise is to take a fresh look at your playground (abundance, relationships, health) you’ve been avoiding or ‘dealing/struggling with’. We will be using the reflection below in four different ways.
You’ll want to give yourself approximately 30 minutes for this ‘playtime’. Please follow all of the steps, as one builds upon another.

You will need: A quiet, uninterrupted space, a notebook and pen (please do not use your computer for this exercise)

1. Take several deep breaths. Breathe slowly in and out………allow yourself to focus on your breathing.

2. Slowly, read the reflection below, then go to step 3.

“There are no accidents, (your name). If it’s appeared on your life radar, this is why: To teach you that dreams come true; to reveal that you have the power to fix what’s broken and heal what hurts; to catapult you beyond seeing with just your physical senses; and to lift the veils that have kept you from seeing that you’re already the person you dreamed you’d become. There are no accidents, (your name).” *

3. In your notebook, write the above reflection in its entirety…….write it slowly and intentionally.

4. Now, underline words or phrases that “popped out” as you read and wrote it. Notice what you underlined.

5. Next, re-write the entire passage a second time. (It is important to entirely rewrite it, rather than just re-read it). As you write, allow your heart to show you which playground (abundance, relationships, health) is the one that, for now can lead to you to your greatest expansion.

6. Record which playground you’ve chosen for your focus of growth. Write a little story about it. Include people, circumstances, some events, toys, tools, struggles that are contained in your playground. Create the image as detailed as you can.

7. Now, let’s switch perspectives. Rewrite the reflection a third time. This time, as you write, focus on the words and message as if God/Source is describing you. When complete, underline words or phrases that “pop” from this perspective. How does this perspective feel? Any new insights?

8. Lastly, rewrite it completely a fourth time. This time, use the reflection as a prayer of thanksgiving, inserting “Thank you” for each: “Thank you that there are no accidents. Thank you that this playground has appeared on my life’s radar. Thank you that dreams do come true. Thank you that I have the power to fix what’s broken and heal what hurts. Thank you that I am being catapulted beyond seeing with just my physical senses. Thank you that the veil is being lifted and I am seeing that I am already the person I dreamed I’d become. Thank you that there are no accidents. Thank you that I am growing and expanding. Thank you for my playground.”

9.  Listen to your new insights. Feel whatever it is you are feeling. Allow yourself to let go and be thankful. Allow yourself to be the “You” that you really are and, through this lens view your playground in a fresh, new way.

10. Read this reflection often. Play in your playground daily with fresh perspective and adventure knowing that the “why” is only filled with Love.

Swinging On A Star – A Mom’s Story

mommy [mom-ee] -noun: 1. every woman who has nurtured and cared for a person or object  2. every woman who has given birth to an idea, thought or dream

This perfect description inspired me to reflect on my own birthing/mothering experience.

I have the joy of sharing life with two amazing daughters, recent graduates from high school and college.  Over the years, I have had thousands of opportunities to play a part in their journey of giving birth and subsequent growth.

I found my “motherly” mission statement, interestingly enough on a Hallmark card: “A mother helps you push your swing so you can touch the stars”.  This perfectly stated what I believe a Mommy’s role to be.

Living by this motto, I’d like to share with you some examples of how this plays out in parenting (and in relationships with all the people in my life).

Beliefs that have grown from this motto:

  • They are not “mine” (as in, “These are MY children”, often used as a form of ownership or control)
  • They get to choose the swing.  It is their life.  It is their dream.  It is their journey
  • I am their guide, looking for ways of cultivating their experience of living life to the fullest
  • It is my role to be aware of who they truly are and foster this becoming
  • I trust that their inner Spirit knows the way, therefore I listen and hold the light for their dreams and talents to grow and flourish
  • I am a lighthouse, a beacon for their dreams

Ruth, age 23 is a sweet, fun, extroverted, left brain adventurer!  Her junior year in high school, we received a postcard from a US college in Switzerland.  She showed interest in attending, as her passion had been to travel and explore.  This opportunity of attending college in Europe, complete with myriads of travel experiences as well as meeting people from dozens of countries, would literally lay the world at her feet.  I pursued this idea and a way was made clear for her to go.  At age 18, we “pushed that swing” all the way to Lugano,Switzerland!  Was it hard “letting her go?”  Yes and no.  Yes, because we wouldn’t see each other for many months, but in another way, it was very easy.  She was launching the life of her dreams and I was privileged to play a major role in making it happen!

Ellen, age 19 is a gentle, wise, introverted, right brain traveler!  At age 2 she asked me if we could say our prayers at night so we could “Thank God”.  She has always marched to the beat of her own drummer and it has been my honor to grow with her as she creates her own symphony.  For example, for her senior prom, she chose a prom dress that was beautiful and “pricey”.  She set her sites on it and said “Mom, this is the dress for me”.  I asked, “How are you going to pay for it”?  She confidently said, “I know I will have it.  The money will come.”  Feeling rather awkward at playing the “let’s-get-real” parenting role, yet not wanting her to be disappointed, I said, “What if you don’t get enough money?”  She said to me, “Mom, you’re always telling me that things will work out.  I know I will have the money.  It’s going to happen.”  Well, with ‘knowing’ and believing like that (I could feel it emanating from her soul), I decided to live by my motto and let the magic unfold as she so clearly knew it would.  Low and behold, the money showed up in the perfect amount, at the perfect time!  Her dream prom dress looked fabulous and shined especially bright because Ellen knew she allowed it!  I was proud of myself for getting out of the way from her already high-flying swing!!

All of us are Exceptional Women, eagerly pushing the swing (when needed) for those we love so they can touch their stars!

Celebrating all women who know that ‘letting go’ is the only way to fly-Joan Kappes

Now – The Experience of a Lifetime

Now is where you experience all the fun

Now is where all your passion dwells

Now is where who YOU really are is found and re-membered

Now is where true living is experienced

Now is where you rediscover your power

Now is where the leverage of the Universe is found and used

Now is where all Love lives and flourishes

In your Now is the fountain of Life

In your Now you experience and dance with God

 What can Now look like?

Now is experiencing the smell of a fragrant lilac

Now is experiencing the enjoyment of an unexpected conversation with your child

Now is experiencing 0-60 in 4.5 seconds

Now is experiencing the letting go of future worries and past regrets creating the opening for feeling the hand of God upon your shoulder

Now is experiencing the care of a doctor or nurse

Now is the experience of hearing the sound of a lawn mower

Now is being so engrossed in a project at work that you are amazed at the time that has passed

Now is experiencing the feeling of the wind on your face

Now is experiencing the water of your daily shower

Now is experiencing the interest of a dog watching a bird

Now is the experience of hearing birds call to one another

Now is experiencing a baby’s smile and relishing in the joy of it

Now is experiencing planning for the future

Now is experiencing thinking about the past

Now is experiencing listening and hearing the dreams of a friend

Now is experiencing the breath of life flowing through your lungs

Now is trusting in God/Source experiencing that, in this moment, all is well

Now is the experience (not judgment, analysis, worry or regret) of your moment-to-moment life!

By allowing yourself to experience the life and gifts contained in each moment, you have discovered the ‘why’ of life and are creating the space for God/Source to bring you more of what you believe Life to be!

“Wherever you are, be there totally” – Eckhart Tolle

Today’s “leaping” exercise:  Let’s practice experiencing ‘Now’.  We’ll begin by experiencing breakfast!  Make it your intention to be present to and experience the food you eat.  Ready?  Turn off any news or music.  Try to eat alone for this practice.  Place the food before you.  Without judgment, just notice the color, the aroma, the texture, etc.  Use all your senses; try to keep your thought commentary out of it.  Just experience the food before you.  Next, place some food on your utensil, close your eyes and eat.  Experience the food on your tongue and in your mouth.  Taste it.  Revel in it.  Again, focus on the experience of it rather than your mind’s analysis.  Repeat for lunch and dinner.  The next day, experiment with something else.  Some ideas:  Experience yourself lying down in your bed, or the experience of walking, or playing with an animal, or the experience of listening to music.  Start with easy things, then expand your practice with conversations and work projects, etc.

The point:  LIVE and experience the moment!  Because you are enjoying and acknowledging what you have, you’ll soon feel better about yourself and your day; the added benefit –  you will be allowing more joy and wanted experiences to flow into your life!

Learning to experience your life takes some time, practice and commitment.  I know that once you take this ‘Come to the Edge Today’ leap, you will never go back!

You Are HERE

I recently experienced an amazing 10 day cruise of the Eastern Caribbean.  I could write a book about all the joy, wonder and life I experienced!  It was truly, a gift of a lifetime.

Today, I’d like to share with you one of the precious gifts I received as I was preparing to disembark the ship:

For 10 days, there it was, staring at me each time I pressed the elevator button.  Only upon my departure did I recognize it:  A map of the ship that read, “You are Here”.  I saw it, gasped and laughed.

You are Here”.

Of course!

This was my bon voyage gift reminding me that no matter where I am, on a magnificent ship, in my home or camping in a tent, “You are Here”.  I can be experiencing the delights of a cruise ship, exploring the magical Caribbean islands, meeting delightful people from around the world –  and the reality is, “You are Here”.  Just as real, I can also be experiencing the delights of my home and community, exploring the seemingly everydayness of my ‘to do’ lists, and meeting delightful people at the grocery store or on the telephone – this too, is the gift:  “You are Here”.

You are Here.

You are “Here“, now…. and there is magic and gifts, Life and awareness to be recognized and claimed, ”Here”, wherever you are.  It is my choice to see it, accept it into my life and experience it!

And, it doesn’t cost a cent……………

Today’s “leaping exercise”:  Allow yourself the gift of being “Here” for 10 days!  Carry a small  notebook with you and commit to recognizing, claiming and experiencing 20 small gifts each day.    (Example:  1. Found a penny! 2. Pleasant conversation with person in front of me at the grocery store 3. Stopped to experience a one-of-a-kind sunset tonight  4. Slowed down at lunch and ‘tasted’ all of the wonderful food before me).

Recognize.  Claim.  Experience!

You have found the gift of Life and it is “Here”, right now.

Grateful for being “Here” –Joan Kappes

Be Living

I am honored today to share this poem written by my friend, Steve Garnaas-Holmes, who has lived his entire life at “The Edge“.  His words say it all:

BE LIVING

Grace and Peace to you,

For what will it profit you to gain the whole world and forfeit your life?  Indeed, what can you give in return for your life?” —Mark 8. 36-37

What is most precious

can’t be taken from you.

What is most worth seeking

you already have.

You are not a fortress,

you are a soul.

Don’t be a thing —

be living.

Live in your own life,

not this other stuff.

When you live in loving kindness

you trade your whole world

for a greater one.

The heart is bigger

than the rest of the world.

Deep Blessings,

Pastor Steve

And the Children Will Lead Us….

Today’s ‘Come to the Edge‘ reflection is beautifully, honestly and passionately presented by two contestants featured on “Britain’s Got Talent, 2012”.  I invite you to view the entire video, not just to experience their  amazing talent,  but more, to feel their love, care and loyalty to each other and to their passion for singing.

These ‘children’ will lead you to your heart’s center, to ‘the edge’ of your dreams.

Enjoy….

Today’s “leaping exercise“:  Reflect, journal or meditate on the following:  What is my passion?  Do I live it every day no matter what?   If not, what baby steps I can take each day to move towards living my passion?  Who are the ‘support people’ in my life, like Charlotte to help support me so I can really ‘go for it’?  Do I base my actions on the judgments of others?  Am I willing to do what it takes, no matter what to live the life of my dreams?  TODAY IS MY DAY!

Grateful for their inspiration – Joan Kappes
