How To Experience a Fabulous Life – Part 2

Well, how did it go?  Did you identify more with the cockatoo or the ibex?  On one topic were you more like the bird while another caused you to turn into the loveable ibex?  What else did you notice?  Did you discover thought patterns you weren’t aware of?  A revealing exercise, yes?

I am referring to Part 1 of this mini series:  How to Experience a Fabulous Life!

arztsamuiSummary of Part 1:  Imagine each thought you have as if it were a stick; one end of the stick represents what is ‘wanted’ by you and the other end represents what is ‘not wanted’.  ’What is wanted’ by you feels like relief; it feels pleasant, happy or just ‘good’.  It feels ‘downstream’, like you are going with the current in your boat, whereas ‘what is not wanted’ by you feels ‘upstream’, like you are paddling against the current in your boat.  It could feel frustrating, annoying, stressful or a myriad of other not-so-good feelings.  Example:  ’This RV is a lot of work and I’m tired of the maintenance” (This thought focuses on ‘what is not wanted’ and feels ‘upstream’).  Example:  ”This RV has given our family many years of good memories and it has been enjoyed by all of us” (This thought focuses on ‘what is wanted’ and feels ‘downstream’).

The key to experiencing a fabulous life is that we get to choose which ‘end of the stick’ to focus upon (and we do choose whether we are aware of it or not).  By becoming aware of this life-giving tool, we can create a new habit of choosing what is ‘wanted’ (what feels ‘downstream’) on all thoughts and subjects.  Why is this important?  Because we are creators and God/Source has gifted all of us with the gift of free will which is always honored.  If we continually choose (even by default) the ‘what is not wanted’ (upstream) end of the stick, we will experience the essence of that focus (that’s how free will ’works’).  Likewise, if we develop the habit of choosing and focusing upon the ‘what is wanted’ (downstream) end of the stick, we will experience the essence of that focus (free will works for this end of the stick too)!

Today in Part 2, you will discover how to make a change from one end of the stick to the other and refocus on what is wanted (so you can feel better now and begin to attract the ‘what is wanted’ experiences into your life.  The following strategy is guaranteed to help you feel better in just a few minutes by implementing these simple steps.

Today’s “leaping exercise”:

If you are feeling hope and joy and elation, NOW is a great time to 'milk' it and increase your vibration and good feelings! If you are feeling hope and joy and elation, NOW is a great time to ‘milk’ it and increase your vibration and good feelings!  For fun, watch the video again and dance with this darling bird! (The video is in Part 1) Then, make a list of 10 thoughts you are hopeful, joyful and elated about (they can be about any subject or subjects).  The point is to ‘milk’ feeling good.  Why?  Because, we get the essence of what we think (and feel) – so, if we are feeling good and deliberately focus on better feeling, downstream thoughts, more good thoughts will come which will lead to better life experiences (that’s the way it works, so might as well be deliberate about it)!

If you are feeling somewhat like the Ibex today, this is ok too.   When I feel this way, I give myself permission to ‘get it out’, sulk and be When feeling bad, it's important to acknowledge and accept where you are ('I am where I am, and it's ok'). crabby.  I give myself, for example, a few minutes, an hour or a day to ‘get it out’, knowing that once I do, I can refocus and move on.  So, for fun, play the video and pretend you are the Ibex reacting to the ‘what is not wanted’ end of the stick.

Now, here is the really great part!  If you want to feel better NOW by focusing on the ‘what is wanted’ end of the stick you can!  Even though you are disappointed and perhaps fearful or resigned (or whatever you are feeling), you can refocus to feel better NOW!  Will you be dancing like the Cockatoo in 5 minutes?  No, but you can feel better than you do right now!

How to do this?  By refocusing using ‘general’ thoughts.  Simply, these thoughts are broader in nature – they are not specific.  It’s THE best place to begin to feel better.

When you are feeling down, aware that you are focused on the upstream, ‘what is unwanted’ end of the stick, stay general in your thoughts, as a broader focus on any topic will turn your thoughts around, little by little.  Getting too specific with your thoughts when feeling down will just make it worse.

Example:  Imagine it is election night and you just received news that the candidate you absolutely ‘cannot stand’ just won.  You feel dread, frustration, disappointment and many other feelings; you are in a bad mood!  After giving yourself some time to sulk, you decide that you do not want to stay in these lower level vibrations.  You are dedicated to feeling better, regardless of the circumstances and you decide to look for something on the ‘other end of the stick’ to focus upon.  There is no way you can feel better by specifically focusing upon the newly elected official (and may never be able to), but you do want to focus more positively on the subject of your country.

Choose your thoughts!Following is an example of ‘general’ thoughts located on the downstream, ‘wanted’ end of the stick regarding the election.  As you read the following, feel if any give you some relief.  The goal is to find some relief, then build upon these thoughts.  (Simple, yet very powerful when practiced!)

  • “Yesterday, I was furious.  Today I feel disappointed.”
  • “Some years my candidates win and other years they do not…I know that this process has been in existence for 200+ years.  It’s a good system.”
  • “I know that Americans want the best for our country and we each have our own opinion about how it should be.”
  • “There have been other elections where my candidate did not win and I’m still here.”
  • “I like living in the U.S. where each citizen has a right to vote”
  • “I am glad I voted.”
  • “Progress seems slow, but over time I notice that we learn and grow as individuals and citizens.”

Notice how each of the statements above are very general.  The more something is upsetting to you, the more general the thoughts should be (for relief purposes).  After feeling some relief, ‘milk’ those statements with more and more relief-providing thoughts.  Then, as you feel better, you will notice thoughts perhaps becoming more specific.  (Try it!  This really works!)

OK, your turn.  Choose a topic where you know you are focusing on the upstream, ‘what is unwanted’ end of the stick.  Write 10 statements ofIamnee your own that are general in nature, feeling for thoughts that give you relief.  Allow even more ‘downstream’ thoughts to come to you, giving you even more relief.  Feel what happens!

Another tool for learning how to refocus:  I suggest the 4 minute process (which can be used around any subject), called “The Focus Wheel” process.  Click the link for the how-to video for using this powerful process.

No matter how you are feeling in this momentchoose to feel better now by deliberately choosing one thought that gives you a feeling of a little relief, then choose the next relief-producing thought, and the next.  Develop this habit and the magic of the Universe will deliver more than you can imagine!

How To Experience a Fabulous Life – Step 1

True or false:  ”Experiencing a fabulous life is possible for me.”

Do you believe this?

If you answered, ‘Yes, I believe a fabulous life is possible for me’, then read on for how to create an even more fabulous life!  If you answered, ‘No, I don’t believe it because life is ________(fill in the blank)’, then read on just in case you discover a new perspective from which to view your life.  Regardless of your answer, together let’s accept Life’s invitation to ‘Come to the Edge Today!’ and explore this topic for a few minutes, ok?

Let’s get to it – What is Life’s answer to the question of ‘how to experience a fabulous life?’

Consider this:  Every thought we think offers a choice for focus.  One choice focuses on ‘what is wanted’ by you and the other focuses on ‘what is not wanted’.

criminalattPicture each thought as if it were a stick; one end of the stick represents what is ‘wanted’ by you and the other end represents what is ‘not wanted’.

The key to experiencing a fabulous life is that we get to choose which ‘end of the stick’ to focus upon (andpencil10 we do choose whether we are aware of it or not). Likewise, if we develop the habit of choosing and focusing upon the ‘what is wanted’ (downstream) end of the stick, we will experience the essence of that focus (free will works for this end of the stick too)!*

I’d like you to experience the extremes of how each end of the stick feels.  So for fun, pretend that the cockatoo video is the end of the stick that represents the feeling of ‘what is wanted’ by you.  Then, view the Ibex video as a representation of the feeling of the ‘what is unwanted’ end of the stick.  Ready?  View both videos now.

This Cockatoo represents the ‘what-is-wanted’-by-me feeling (watch video now)

Ibex represents the ‘what-is-not-wanted’-by-me feeling (watch video)

Today’s ‘leaping’ exercise:  Now that you have experienced the feeling of the ‘wanted’/downstream and ’unwanted’/upstream ends of the stick,  let’s practice a few thoughts so you get the hang of it.  I’ll offer a few statements below.  Notice the thoughts and feelings that come up as you read them.  Write down as many thoughts about each as you can.  Ready?

  • Winter, 2014
  • The government
  • My job
  • My physical body
  • Spring, 2014

Example:  I am sick of this Winter!!! (this thought focuses on ‘what is not wanted’/upstream) or, ‘My body is strong and looks good’ (this thought focuses on ‘what is wanted’/downstream)

After writing down your thoughts and feelings, notice what you wrote.  How did each thought feel?  Which end of the stick (wanted or unwanted) is each leaning toward? Does it feel downstream or upstream?  Is there a pattern?  What else do you notice?    As you may have noticed, each thought or topic may focus in a completely different way.  One topic may feel extremely ‘downstream’ while the next may feel extremely ‘upstream’.  Note that where you go with each thought is a habit of focus!!!  Play this game throughout the week noticing where your habits of thought are and how each feels (upstream or downstream).*

criminalattYou may be asking, “Ok, I get it, but what difference does it really make if I focus on what I don’t want vs what I do want”?  EVERYTHING!  You are a powerful creator and you get what is focused upon (and believe) whether you want it or not.  Using this #1 creating tool, (your thoughts combined with awareness of how those thoughts feel, then choosing the ‘what is wanted’ end of the stick) is key to experiencing the life you’ve always wanted!

*Part 2 provides tools for how to make a change and refocus on what is wanted.  For now, practice on noticing what you are thinking and how you feel when you think it.  By being diligent, you are using the power of your free will to create a powerful habit that is communicating to the Universe what you want and how you want to feel!  And, because of this new habit, the essence of ‘what is wanted’ will come to you in creative, loving ways!

Remember, with every thought, you get to freely choose which end of the stick to focus upon!

Oh, the freedom of choice! -  Joan Kappes

The Beauty of Now

Stuart 2014Early this morning, I let the dog out and discovered two inches of snow had fallen with three more on the way.  I  groaned and said to myself, “More winter; today it’s snow instead of cold.”  I felt resigned.

Stuart, my Yorkie Poo was eagerly expecting his morning walk (always the highlight of his day).  As I walked out the door, my head was multitasking and arranging the day, now with the addition of shoveling added to the list.

Walking up the driveway, I heard this clear voice inside of me say, ‘Joan, the beauty is ‘NOW’.  Your moment to live is ‘NOW’.  In an instant this reminder took me out of my multi-tasking mode into the present where immediately my focus and experience changed.

I heard chickadees (my favorite birds) calling to one another.  I heard the silence that comes with a snowfall. I experienced Stuart romping through the snow.  I experienced the magic of the pure white snow.

I felt the coolness of the snowflakes hitting my face.  I felt the warmth of 20 degree weather (recently it has been extremely cold).  I felt the familiar feeling of my feet plodding through unshoveled paths.

I saw swirls of snow gently falling from the gray sky.  I saw the evergreen trees welcome each snowflake as 0130140812they rested upon their needles.  Magnificence!

The ‘to do’ list vanished, the weariness of January winter disappeared.  I was filled with …….the moment.  It was peace and joy.  It was perfection.

Today’s ‘leaping’ exercise: Imagine that you hear an invitation from your heart.  What is it inviting you to experience this moment?  Stop what you are doing and thinking – let everything go for now.  Refocus on your senses.  What are you seeing, hearing, tasting, touching, smelling and feeling?  Experience the moment.  (If this is new to you and seems awkward, it’s ok.  Just begin to practice.  There is always an open invitation from God/Source to ‘Come to the Edge’ to experience the beauty of this moment and the next and the next……..)

the beauty of now

The Ultimate New Year’s Resolution

We are “Come to the Edge Today” people, striving to live our lives to the fullest, answering daily invitations to grow and expand.  Because this is who we are, we view the approaching New Year as an opportunity for new insights, new beginnings, new resolutions.  We are determined and resolved to make changes.  Like you, I am anticipating the New Year with expanded visions and dreams for my life.  Mindful of these dreams, I began reading and journaling.  I’d like to share with you some of the insights I uncovered.  As the words began to flow onto the page, I could feel the resonance of them flowing from deep within.  I share them with the hope that you will find their meaning too.

Reflections on a New Years resolution:  Unfolding My Rose

It began with these quotes from “The Dance” by Oria Mountain Dreamer:

“What if your contribution to the world and the fulfillment of your own happiness is not dependent upon discovering a better method of prayer or technique of meditation, not dependent upon reading the right book or attending the right seminar, but upon really seeing and deeply appreciating yourself and the world as they are right now?”

“What if the task is simply to unfold, to become who you already are in your essential nature – gentle, compassionate, and capable of living fully and passionately present?”

“What if the question is not why am I so infrequently the person I really want to be, but why do I so infrequently want to be the person I really am?”

“What if becoming who and what we truly are happens not through striving and trying but by recognizing and receiving the people and places and practices that offer us the warmth of encouragement we need to unfold?”

These quotes “wowed” me with their truth.  And then I read this:

“Because you have no faith that who you are is enough”.

I was thrown off my chair with the truth and depth of this simple sentence.  “Because you have no faith that who you are is enough”.  Take some time to consider this!  Isn’t this at the core of how we live so much of our lives?  We do, relate, buy, prove, disprove, etc. etc. because deep down, we think there is something missing, something lacking in who we are.  We see ourselves as broken.  We think we are not enough.

What if nothing is broken?  What if our lives are part of the grand Whole and living is an opportunity for unfolding the gift that is already present?

This revelation that I am “enough” is a lifelong unfolding process – unfolding layer upon layer of the Wholeness that is already “me”.  It is like unfolding the pedals of a Rose.

This year is an opportunity for learning and allowing “me” to come forth.  It’s not about ‘becoming’ anything – it’s about the discovery of ‘being’.  There is nothing to overcome or to mend.  There is only revealing and unfolding of the me that ‘is’.  There is nothing to improve.  There is only unfolding.

My life, my world then, becomes a treasure chest to explore rather than something broken to be fixed.  And, if nothing is broken in me, then nothing is broken in you either.  My relationship with you and everyone in my world is about the unfolding of seeing you as you really are too.

There is nothing to improve.  There is only unfolding.

Let us “Come to the Edge” this New Year with the intention to experience and ‘know’ that “Who I am is enough”.

Today’s “leaping” exercise:  Spend minutes, hours, days considering the following questions.  Ponder, journal, meditate, ‘unfold’ these questions for the New Year:

What does it feel like to know that ‘all I am is enough’?  What will it look like to experience the unfolding of my Rose?  How will I see and interact with you if all I see is the unfolding of your Rose?

You are a perfect Rose to be unfolded and discovered, as am I – Joan Kappes

The ‘To-Do’ List Takeover

Stuart Miles 2I felt it coming.  Sweeping into my life, predictably showing up 5-10 days before Christmas, the annual Christmas ‘To-Do’ list takeover.  Through the years it has become an expert in overwhelming my thoughts, actions, feelings, schedule and everything else connected with the last two weeks of December.  I become a robot, transfixed with checking off items on ‘the list’ – sometimes, even checking it twice!

True to form, it arrived on schedule but this year I didn’t struggle with its entrance or give it much attention.  In fact, I barely noticed its arrival.  I greeted it and acknowledged the To-Do list (which I really do want to complete), but this year, instead of turning myself over to its frantic, ‘gotta-do-it-now-and-do-it-right’ robot mode, I am approaching the whole list and season differently.

Rather than reacting, I have created a new perspective about the list and the potential it holds to experience joy and happiness because of it.  Instead of being controlled by it, I am deliberately choosing to complete each item with intention and love for the people who are the receivers (whether it is grocery shopping, baking cookies or planning a party) and, just as important, I am choosing to experience each item on the list with an elf-like spirit of fun, playfulness and joy (yes, even cleaning the house)!  I am being deliberate about what I am doing and why I am doing it.  Such a difference in the quality of my days!

Elf shoes TinyPic

I renamed it too.  Rather than the ‘To-Do’ list, it is now my ‘Elf’ list.  Sounds like more fun, doesn’t it?

Merry Christmas and Happy Holidays to you, my fellow elves!Joan Kappes

‘Follow Your Bliss’ – Sometimes Scary, But Always Worth it

“Follow your bliss” – Easier said than done sometimes, yet always worth it.

bliss2I had a crossroads choice today.  I could go with my familiar ‘you should do this’ option, or choose the option at ‘the edge’ where I would need to leap into the unknown.

From a logical point of view, I ‘should’ have chosen the opportunity presented to me as it would have spurred my life coaching and my passionate message to you of living life with joy on a fast track.  My monkey mind was saying, “But, this is the opportunity of a lifetime!  But, who are you to refuse such an offer!  But, but, but…………”  My insides, however, were lovingly prodding me that this would not be the perfect path for me; this was clearly illuminated through my journaling and the sick feeling I had on the inside as I considered  the ramifications of saying yes.  Still, the ‘shoulds’ continued running through my thoughts.

Then, I imagined what it would feel like to say ‘no’ and what it would feel like to say ‘yes’.  This too was clear.  My heart was saying I wouldn’t like how I would feel taking this path as it currently stood.  Yet, my thoughts kept saying, “But, this is the opportunity of a lifetime!  But, who are you to refuse such an offer!  But, but, but…………”

I was proud that I kept open to the process.  Next, I played the What-if game:   “What if” I chose this way?  “What if” I chose that way, imagining how it would feel to live a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ path.

It became clear to me that this was a moment for me to follow what I have been writing about for so long:  Listen to my heart, act from what I hear and follow my bliss (even though logic demanded otherwise and the result was unknown).  Funny side note:  the assumption I made was that saying ‘yes’ was a known path!  Not!

I decided to let go, trusting that there would be many other options presented to me that would be more in line with my intentional joy path.  Going with the guidance I felt within, I picked up the phone and declined the offer.  RELIEF!  (FYI, I knew prior to the phone call that relief would be the result because of the imagining games I played above.)

Low and behold, 3 hours later, I received a phone call from the person whose offer I declined earlier, offering a wonderful option that fits perfectly with what I want for my life’s experience!  A win-win for both of us!

What is most important to me is I let the ‘shoulds’ go.  I listened and remained true to my heart’s message! luigi diamanti THIS is the true joy of the story.  I DID IT and the magic followed.

Today’s ‘leaping’ exercise:  Next time you have a crossroads choice, try the following:

  • Give yourself time to quiet your mind and open your heart.  (Meditate, sit in silence or listen to quiet music)
  • Time to journal.  Be incredibly honest with yourself.   Express your feelings, pros, cons, etc.  Get it all out on paper
  • Next, imagine what it feels like to say ‘no’ and what it feels like to say ‘yes’.  (Note:  Feelings are your heart/soul’s language!  Pay attention!  ‘Good’ feelings are saying ‘yes’ and negative feelings are saying ‘no’)
  • Now, play the What-if game:   “What if” I choose this way?  “What if” I choose that way, imagining how it would feel to live a ‘yes’ or ‘no’ path.  Listen to what your heart/gut is saying to you
  • Take time to sit with what you are hearing and feeling.
  • Decide with awareness and intention.  Trust yourself that what you are hearing is your truth guided by your heart/soul
  • Let it go. Leap.  Give thanks.  Allow yourself to receive from The Universe

Leaping with the intention of following our bliss is really living.  Listening with intention and acting in faith is totally ‘safe’ because we are leaping with God/Source.  There is no need to look for a net either, because when we leap with our heart, there is no bottom, only unlimited sky from which to soar.

This is really living – Joan Kappes
