Enjoying Your Day – A ‘How-To’ Guide

“Enjoy your day!”

Thanks, but how do I do that?  I know how to enjoy the fun days – that is easy because I like what I am doing.  But, how do I enjoy (i.e. experience Joy) everyday, every hour?

It might be helpful to begin with a dictionary definition of ‘enjoy’:  According to the dictionary, enjoy is a verb to ‘take pleasure in something, to have a pleasurable experience’.  The prefix EN means ‘to cause a person to be in the condition of.. (ex. enjoyment).  It also means ‘on all sides’.  So, to ‘enJoy’ means to be in the place or state of Joy and to be completely surrounded by it!‘enjoy’ means to be in the place or state of joy and to be completely surrounded by it!

To be surrounded by joy and live the benefits of its blissful state is one of the wonderful, quirky and sometimes mysterious habits we get to create as we journey our life at ‘The Edge’.

“Habits, did you say?”

Yes!  The experience of Joy is a habit and we have free will to open the portal to experience its delights every hour of everyday.  (We really do!)

Some Joy-ful facts!

*Joy needs us.  Without our permission, it cannot express itself in our lives

*Joy lives within each of us and looks for any opening we give it to share its gifts

*Joy is very clever

*Joy loves to surprise and delight

*Joy will not use force.  It is patient and shines forth when we let go and open to its gifts

*Joy wants to co-create a wonder-filled life with usJoy loves to surprise and delight

*Joy is heart-centered (not monkey-mind centered)

*Joy comes when we are focused upon what is wanted

*Joy is experienced moment-by-moment

*Joy can be experienced as thoughts of the past, present and future – all experienced in ‘Now-time’

How to begin creating a new habit, a new portal for Joy?  Remember, habits are created one thought, one repeated, focused intention at a time.  Below are some examples of how to allow Joy to express (these are my real-life examples)

*  Mowing the lawn – a choice between seeing and experiencing it as a chore or focusing on appreciating the beauty of the moment and the experience of being outdoors – opening a portal for Joy to envelope me

*  Paying monthly bills – a choice between seeing lack and burden (and all the yada, yada that goes with it) or refocusing to see flow, abundance and gratitude for the experiences given to me because of what I am paying back– inviting a channel for experiencing Joy of past, present and future events

*  Handling paperwork – a choice between focusing on repetition, boredom, wishing I was doing something else, etc. and refocusing on the talents, time and benefits of doing this with gratitude – allowing a channel for joy to flow, surprise and delight

*  Doing laundry – a choice between focusing on drudgery and boredom or refocusing to allow a new perspective of slowing down, refocusing on gratitude and the experiences and comfort each piece of clothing has given me – thus, opening a channel for joy to flow

Open a portal for JoyToday’s “leaping” exercise:  Spend the day finding 4 thoughts or experiences where you find yourself allowing Joy.  Notice what you were thinking, doing and feeling.  Write these experiences in your journal.  As a bonus, re-create these Joy-ful moments as you write, remembering that Joy is created using past, present and future thoughts and experiences.  Then, identify 4 areas where you find yourself via your thought-focus, not allowing Joy to come through.  Find as many softer, positive aspects (as I did above) as you can, to allow Joy to flow through and transform these.   Notice!  Repeat!  Create new portals for Joy!

‘Bliss’ Has a Surprise for You!

What if Bliss were a living ‘thing’ - a living, breathing energy??? It’s time for breathing in the beauty of the season. So naturally, on one of these ‘looking-at-the-clouds-passing-by kind of days I would be pondering ……..Bliss.

My imagination kicked in: What if Bliss were a living ‘thing’ – a living, breathing energy??? If so, then what does it look like? How can it be described? What are its characteristics? When does it show up? If bliss is a living, flowing energy whose purpose is to surprise and delight, how can I become more attuned to its presence? How can I welcome it more and more into my life?

I spent the day imagining words that describe Bliss. Here are just a few from my long list: Freedom, ecstacy, happiness, delight, harmony, joy, peace, delight, joyfulness, excitement, adventure, silence, lack of resistance, free expression, contentment, gratitude, bliss, laughter, merriment, calm. Each of these connects me with the feeling of Bliss. After ‘trying on’ each of these words for an afternoon, I was, as you can imagine feeling pretty Bliss-full!

If Bliss is this delightful energy, how does it show up?  I discovered that Bliss is very clever! Its creativity is unlimited in its desire and power to delight. It shows up everywhere and to everyone; how it manifests is based on our unique likesBliss is very clever! and pleasures. Bliss loves to show up in music, in nature, in beauty, in food and drink, in ‘special’ times and in ordinary, in every expression through the senses, in silence, in noise, in solitude, in crowds, in ‘down time’, at work and in any of the 24 hours of the day!

After pondering this for a few days, I discovered a perfect example of how Bliss spreads its delight and magic. The short video below is the most enchanting example of one woman accepting and living her Bliss I have ever seen. (I experienced Bliss just watching her!). I invite you to watch this short, Bliss-filled video (make sure you watch until the very end!); we will finish with how to invite this energy to flow through your life and your days…..

How to connect with this spry, delightful energy called Bliss: Today’s ‘leaping’ exercise: Begin by identifying with a word that connects you to a feeling of Bliss (joy, peace, laughter, delight, bliss etc.) Then, throughout each day, actively put your ‘feelers out’ for circumstances that come your way that allow you to experience that word/feeling in your day (don’t worry – it will be there!). When you recognize it, STOP and feel it! Experience it! (After all, isn’t this what we’re all after – the experience of Bliss?) Acknowledge and thank it. It’s a habit, so commit to growing it everyday. (You’ll have so much fun looking for evidence of Bliss flowing through your life that it will be a fun habit to create!)

To FEEL bliss is a habit. It’s there…………are you ready to experience it? –

Life’s Magnificent Quilt

WE learn and grow with each other and are supported with Love’s never ending flow.WE share life with each other.  Life!  with all its brilliance, surprise, delight, growth and challenge.  WE learn and grow with each other and are supported with Love’s never ending flow.

A special friend from college, Lori Crow is experiencing a new journey and has graciously agreed to share her story with all of us. Lori, thank you for sharing your life and your approach to this journey.  You are my inspiration;  you have “Come to the Edge” and are flying……..your way.  Thank you!

Lori’s story:

“I have often used a quilt as my analogy for life. Bright festive colors reflect joy, happiness, and success while the darker threads running through symbolize challenges, sorrow and pain. My quilt has so many brilliant colors; laughter, delight and bliss! It also has its share of dark threads; one of which I am weaving now. I was recently diagnosed with a rare form of cancer called goblet cellMy quilt has so many brilliant colors; carcinoma. I will be undergoing surgery soon to remove lymph nodes, part of my colon, and probably anything else deemed necessary. Time will tell if there needs to be chemotherapy or radiation. We are handed many roads in life that we would rather not travel and there is not one of us that has escaped from some sort of challenge or struggle. I look ahead, not with fear, but with interest and anticipation. What will happen? Who will I meet? What can I learn? I will not bring the color of worry into my quilt. I will mark this dark thread as a new journey; a step onto a staircase whose top I can not see. I am reminded of a quote by Dr.Martin Luther King; “Take the first step in faith. You don’t have to see the whole staircase, just take the first step.” I also believe that the power of prayer is the strongest power on earth so I humbly ask for your prayers as I create my life’s quilt.”

Today’s “leaping” exercise:  What colors and stories make up the quilt of your life?  What threads of experience, thought and belief are woven there?  Are there dark threads that can be transformed with Love?  What steps can you take today to weave the threads of your brilliance and light into your quilt?

Please share your support for Lori in the comment section below. I will pass your message along to her!

Permission Granted!

Do you ever feel this way: ‘Inadequate, unloveable, unsettled because I am not where I want to be in life or any other I’m-not-enough thought?  These ‘upstream’ thoughts feel especially disturbing for those of us who continually have the I-must-be-better button always turned in the ‘on’ position.  We never seem to catch up.  It’s an endless loop, isn’t it?

The ticket to getting off this merry-go-round: Permission!!!

The ticket to getting off this         merry-go-round: Give Yourself Permission!!!

Yes!  Permission is the loophole that allows the oftentimes critical ego to cut you some slack!  (This permission-granting is actually an effective and clever little trick; it works like this: Permission comes from the heart, not the ego. Because the ego is often fearful of new ideas and the possibility that it could be viewed as wrong, it will ‘allow’ this new thought because it knows it has an escape route – blaming the heart/soul for the idea).  Works like a charm – a win/win for the ego and the heart AND the whole of you! (See permission list below)

So, whenever those ‘less-than’ thoughts crop up, simply give yourself permission to think newer, fresher, more loving thoughts.  Create this daily habit and in about a month (or sooner), you will no longer need to give yourself permission as you will be well on the way to BECOMING it! (and your ego will now see this way of thinking as the new ‘normal’!)

The following is a permission list I made for a coaching client.  Since then, it has become one of my favorite get-off-the-merry-go-round-and-cut-myself-some-slack tools!  I enjoy using it everyday.

My Permission ListMy Permission List

I give myself permission to see me differently

I give myself permission to think downstream thoughts – no matter the circumstances

I give myself permission to see the beauty of who I really am

I give myself permission to embrace my talents, interests, humor, joy, inner and outer beauty

I give myself permission to forgive me

I give myself permission to forgive my family

I give myself permission to let go of whatever no longer serves me (memories, thoughts, hurts, habits, relationships)

I give myself permission to break out of the old shell that no longer serves me and

I give myself permission to be ME – to let it come out and to live from the love that is inside me

I give myself permission to shine

I give myself permission to embrace the true, loving, loveable ME

I give myself permission to be the confident Me that is my soul

I give myself permission to Love ME – right now, just as I am

Today’s ‘Leaping’ Exercise:  Read the Permission List out loud  in front of a mirror (very important) twice each day for 28 days.  After reading the entire list in the mirror for a few days, it is ok to focus on one or two that most resonate with you.  As the days pass, notice the changes that are occurring within. This is a very important time to journal your feelings, thoughts and shifts that occur.  your journal entries will show your growth and offer new perspectives.  Have fun and relax!

Your Mother’s Love Note in Your Lunch Box

Have you ever received a lunch box ‘Love note’ from your Mother?

I received one this morning from our Mother – Mother Earth.

(She asked me to pass it on to you)…..

My Dears,

I love you with everything I have and everything I amI honor you and Love you from the depths of all that I am. I thought it time for you to know me more deeply:

I am in the “Life” business. This is who I am and what I do.  I am a life giver.  I am made from the Love and creativity of The One who is pleased to create with You. The energy I bring forth is Love’s Energy – the energy of Life.  I create with it, envelope it and return it to Source, then begin the cycle again.

I am also a co-creator with you.  I am the clay and you are the potter.  We create beauty and life springs from our creations.  We are magnificent.

I know you worry about me.  You ask what you can do for me.  This is all I ask and all I want:  Love me and Love all the Life that I hold.

I want you to know that I am strong enough to heal, just as you are.  I have everything within me to heal and continue to evolve and grow – just as you do.  What is needed for both of us is the continuous flow of Love.  The Love that flows from the heart….not the Oh-yeah-I-love-you-too-kind,  but the real, deep, from-the-heart-and-soul Love that is allowed to ooze and  seep and flow from the depths, swelling, growing then becoming currents of streams, rivers, oceans.  We both want and need this kind of powerful Love that causes Life to flow in and through us, unrestricted and free.

I know this lunch box ‘Love note’ is a little longer than planned, but I really want you to  experience the Love I have for you as I am in the “Life” businessyour Mother – Mother Earth.  You are part of me.  We are connected.  We are One. We are One with All-that-is.

I love you with everything I have and everything I am.

All I have is yours.

Let us Love together, shall we?

I’m So Glad It Was You – 30 Years of Thanks

April 9, 1983Today, I am expressing my deepest thanks  to my love, my best friend, my partner and absolutely my truest fellow adventurer at “The Edge“, Paul Kappes for 30 years of marriage!

Thirty Years!  Wow, how fast the years have flown!

Paul, together we have dreamed our dreams,  grown in their pursuit and reveled in their manifestations.  Together, we have learned the dance of trust and letting go as well as the art of  laughter and not taking life so seriously.  We have discovered the beauty and power of gratitude and thankfulness.  Together, we have learned to value ourselves and each other.  We have created and shared immeasurable memories – all of which I am grateful. Through all these years we continue to unfold the gift of Love and are still expanding in its richness.

And so, I want to say how thankful I am that we share this lifetime together.  I thought it appropriate (and fun) to honor you with this blog post today and to share our joy and gratitude with friends… I love you.

Today’s “leaping exercise”:  Please join in our celebration by posting a comment below:  What are your keys to sharing a joyful relationship?

A Baby’s Gift

Such a gift they give to us, just by being themselves!Yesterday, I was in a coffee shop filled with a variety of people:  Kids running around, teens, adult women and men, some sitting in chairs, some in wheelchairs.  I looked over to the corner of the shop and noticed an older woman holding the most beautiful infant I’d ever seen – I guessed the baby to be about 2 weeks old.  So small, so perfect, so marvelous!  I couldn’t keep my eyes off of her!  Perfection was 20 feet away!  Others in the shop were noticing and smiling too.

What is it about babies that causes us to immediately lower resistance and go into a space of wonder and love?  It happens to me and to most people I know.  They take us inward to that place of joy and hope and beauty and love.  Such a gift they give to us, just by being themselves!

Then, I wondered:  The kids running around, teens, adult women and men, some sitting in chairs, some in wheelchairs in that coffee shop were gifting me too – just by being themselves.  Could I see the gift of “them”?  Was I open to receiving?  Do I even see the gift that I am to myself and to others just by being ‘me’?  Hmmm..I wondered about that.

What if I could allow myself to perceive the kids running around, teens, adult women and men, some sitting in chairs,  some in wheelchairs in that coffee shop with the same lens that I view that perfect infant?  What if I could allow the experience of them to take me inward to that place of joy and hope and beauty and love?

Such a gift to be received!  How to begin to view the people in my world in a new, more open way?  One wayYOU give me joy! to begin:  slow down and see people as living, co-creative souls with gifts and talents and love and beauty – EACH ONE!  I spent some time doing that with the strangers in the coffee shop.  I did not talk to any of them, but as I glanced at each one, I said a little “Thank you for the gift of you”.  My heart became lighter and I somehow became connected to each one.  For some, this may seem rather silly, but to me, it was a lovely way to experience the gifts that are mine to experience, if only by recognizing their (and my) gifts and divinity.

Thank you, baby girl.  You expanded my ability to experience even more Love that surrounds me!  I am grateful.

Today’s “leaping” exercise:  Spend time with a baby (or watch a youtube video of children) and notice how you feel.  Then, go to a place where you can be surrounded by other people.  Slow down and notice each person.  Try to see each one as living, co-creative souls with gifts and talents and love and beauty.  Then, say a silent “Thank you for the gift of you” to each person.  Notice how you feel.  How did this experience affect you?  How does the gratitude you offered feel in your heart?  How does it compare with the feelings you experienced with the baby (or video)?  Repeat and allow it to open a new channel within.
